Italian Socialist Party

The Italian Socialist Party (Partito Socialista Italiano, PSI) was a socialist and then social democratic political party founded in Genoa in 1892. For the majority of its existence it was overshadowed by the larger leftwing party, the Communist Party, founded by former Socialist Party members in 1921, just before the beginning of the fascist dictatorship in 1922.

The last secretary of the PSI was Ottaviano Del Turco. The party disbanded in 1994, after two years of agony, in which almost all of its longtime leaders were involved in Tangentopoli, especially Bettino Craxi. Since then, many minor formations claimed to be its successor: among them the Italian Democratic Socialists and the Socialist Party New PSI, both much smaller than the PSI at the height of its power. Recently, these two have opened talks to refound the socialist party for the 2006 elections, joining the left-wing coalition L'Unione.
