Issay Dobrowen

Issay Dobrowen (1891-1953) was a pianist, composer and conductor, originally from Russia. He's relatively unknown today, but he wrote some very beautiful piano music, reminiscent of Rachmaninoff. He's also known for playing Beethoven's Appasionata Sonata to V. I. Lenin, whose favorite piece of music this was. He was also a close friend of Russian writer Maxim Gorky, and famed Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen. Dobrowen went on to help found the London Symphony orchestra and to conduct the San Francisco Symphony and Gothenburg symphony orchestras. He died in Oslo, Norway.
