Isolationism
Isolationism is a diplomatic policy whereby a nation seeks to avoid alliances with other nations. Most nations are not in a political position to maintain strict isolationist policies for extended periods of time, even though most nations have historical periods where isolationism is popular.
British Isolationism
For most 19th century and 20th century, the United Kingdom isolated itself within her Empire (British Empire), this period was known as Pax Britannica. Britain rarely became involved in European affairs and even in the years following the Second World War, she attempted to maintain the Pax Britannica.
