A riverside settlement from prehistoric times, Isleworth was well established by the time of the Norman Conquest in the 11th century. The earliest form of the name is Gislhaesuuyrth, meaning Gilhere's settlement. All Saints Church occupied its riverside site from the 13th century, being rebuilt in 1705 and 1970. Lower Square still has buildings dating from the 18th and early-19th centuries as well as the redevelopment of the 1980s.
