Islas de Filipinas
Las Islas Filipinas is the Spanish name for the Philippine Islands. The name was given to the islands of Samar and Leyte in 1543 by explorer Ruy López de Villalobos who named it, in honour of the 16 year old crown prince Philip II of Spain. Ultimately the name was later given to the entire islands of the Philippines after the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in 1565.
