When he was a child Brock and his mother moved around in different religious offshoot circles in the North Mid-West. Residing in Issuaquah, WA in a trailer he was made to move out and into a shed on their property when his mothers boyfriend moved in. He also reportedly lived in the second floor of a flooded house and wouldn't leave until forced by the police. In the shed is where he, Eric Judy (bass) and Jeremiah Green (drums) supposedly first started practicing music together.

Brock had several run-ins with the law between 2000 and 2003. These included allegations of DUI, attempted murder, and rape. The two latter charges have since been dropped. The attempted murder charge was applied as a result of a drunk driving incident—the state requires an attempted murder charge in the case of intoxication—in which a friend was injured (though not severely). The rape charge, according to Brock, was a case of "he-said/she-said" and a complete farce. The facts seem to support this; police gave the case little attention and seemed to dismiss it. However, the incident received a fair amount of press and greatly damaged Brock's reputation in the liberal Seattle indie scene. Recently, Brock implied in an interview that the accuser had now fully retracted her story.
