Irony

Irony is a form of expression in which an implicit meaning is concealed or contradicted by the explicit meaning of the expression. Irony involves the perception that things are not what they are said to be or what they seem. Dramatic irony lies in the audience's deeper perceptions of a coming fate, which contrast with a character's lack of knowledge about it.

Cultural Variation

In some countries in the english speaking world, it would appear apprehension and use of irony is more acceptable and understood than others. Similar to variation in the styles of humour and comedy, it would appear that some national or cultural frameworks find irony difficult to appreciate, while others appear to anticipate or expect usage.

As a consequence reliance or dependance upon a single operational structure of irony across cultures would in itself be folly.
