Invincible came at the end of a six-year break for Jackson. The production cost and publicity campaign were massive, and it is believed that the total amount of money spent on the album's creation and promotion was between thirty and fifty million dollars.

Despite the lavish publicity campaign, the album had sales of only 366,000 in the first week. Sales slowly dipped over the winter months, and by 2002 sales had ground to a halt, and the album fell off the charts. The first single, "You Rock My World" reached the top ten of the charts, though many critics felt that the song wasn't a good measure of Jackson's talent. The second single, "Butterflies", became a top-twenty hit, but Sony cancelled promotion of the album in early 2002. To date, the album has sold 2.1 million copies, which is fine by most artist's standards, but poor when compared to Jackson's sales record. It failed to cover the high costs of its production.

Jackson accused Sony of not promoting the album efficiently enough to ensure strong sales, and accused Sony chief Tommy Mottola of racism and exploitation, saying: "He is a mean, he is a racist, and he is very very very devilish." Some Sony artists however, defended Mottolla, including Mariah Carey, his ex-wife, and half-black. The media spectacle surrounding the accusations did nothing to spur sales of the album, which had dropped out of the charts by Spring 2002.
