It was founded by a Polish pianist, composer and teacher Professor Jerzy Zurawlew (1887–1980). Until the 2000 competition, the jury could opt to not award prizes. In 2000, the rules changed to require all six prizes to be awarded, and after 15 years of not awarding the First Prize, the award went to Yundi Li of China.
