Institut Catholique de Paris

Institut Catholique de Paris or the Catholic Institute of Paris is a university (in France, the term university can only be used for publicly-owned institutions of higher learning - prior to 1880, the institute was known as the University of Paris) devoted to the study of all aspects of Catholicism. The institute offers licentiates, master's and doctoral degrees in various faculties related to Catholicism. The professors at the institute are recruited from sacred (i.e., theology, canon law, etc.) and secular disciplines (e.g., letters, philosophy, education, social sciences, economics). The majority of the degrees and diplomas awarded by the institute are diplomas of State. Canonical degrees, awarded in the name of the Holy See are the result of a prescribed course of study in ecclesiastical faculties, such as theology and canon law. The institute belongs to the network of the UDESCA (Union of the Catholic Higher Educational Establishments) which includes the five French Catholic Universities (Paris, Lille, Lyon, Angers and Toulouse), and networks with the International Federation of the Catholic Universities (FICU) comprised of 200 Catholic universities throughout the world. The institute charges tuition as the state does not deal with wages of teachers at Catholic universities as the government allows under the Debré Act of 1959. The institute receives a public subsidy which covers only 34% of its needs for financing (the amount of the subsidy from the Ministry for National Education is fixed each year within the framework of the national budget, but without obligation or contractualization of any kind.
