Since the 14th century, the Inner Temple, like Middle Temple, has been located adjacent to the Temple Church, which serves as the colleges' chapel. The church was the headquarters of the Knights Templar and gives the area around it the name "Temple". It is called the Inner Temple as the church lies within its boundary. It is an independent enclave physically within the City of London, but not governed by the Corporation of London.

The Inner Temple area has been well used as filming locations for various television and cinema films, due to its old Victorian feel. In 2005 filming for the Da Vinci Code film took place here.
