Inner Sanctum
Inner Sanctum Mysteries was a popular old-time radio program that ran from January 7, 1941 to October 5, 1952. Its creator was Himan Brown, who later created the long-running CBS Radio Mystery Theater. It featured stories of mystery, terror and suspense told, in sharp contrast to shows like Suspense and The Whistler, with a broad tongue-in-cheek approach. A total of 526 episodes are known to have been produced, a great many of which are lost today.
Legacy
Slightly more than 100 shows, of the 500 plus broadcast, remain in circulation on tape, often without dates or titles. The series also inspired a 1954 syndicated television series, with Paul McGrath returning as host/narrator, off-camera. In the 1970s, with his CBS Radio Mystery Theater series, Brown recycled both the creaking door opening, and to a lesser extent, the manner of Raymond, as that show's hosts (including E. G. Marshall, Tammy Grimes, and in later repeats in the 1990s, Brown himself) mimicked Raymond's trademark "Pleasant dreeeeams" at the closing.
