Lying on the Essex Great Road (now the A12), Ingatestone was a day's journey from London on horseback or in a coach, and thus had many inns that catered to travellers between London and Colchester. The Anglican church dates from the 11th century, but was later rebuilt. There are many other old buildings, including Ingatestone Hall, the home of the Petre family, which can be visited by tourists.

The name Ingatestone means "manor at the stone" and refers to a mile stone placed there in Roman times. This remains split into three stones, one by the west door of the church and one each side of the entrance to Fryerning Lane.
