Although Infinite Crisis is not scheduled to begin publication until October 12 2005, the plot threads have been explored for a long time in many major events such as Identity Crisis. DC officially began leading up with Countdown to Infinite Crisis, a one-shot issue by Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, and Judd Winick. Afterwards, four mini-series intended solely to tie-in to Infinite Crisis were launched. A collection entitled Prelude to Infinite Crisis, released in late June 2005, collects a number of earlier story references to Infinite Crisis.

In July 2005 it was announced that after the events of Infinite Crisis, the DC Universe would jump forward in time one year and a weekly 52 issue series (with a working title of 52) would be published which would fill in the missing year.
