~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The roots of Indra are in early Vedic religion and mythology. He was the Supreme Deity, God of war and natural phenomena for the Indo-Aryans, probably years before they actually entered India, thus even before Hinduism as a religion and philosophical system was synthesized. Some historians suggest the possibility that Indra is based on the earliest leader of the Aryan tribes that entered and settled in India, inspiring their folklore, legends and worship. The mythic battle between Indra and Vritra is depicted in ancient Iranian religions such as Zoroastrianism. The fact that the Indo-Aryans also settled Iran as they did India may prove Indra's pre-Hindu origins, and his original status for ancient Aryans.
