Independence Party (Iceland)

The Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) is a center-right political party in Iceland. It was formed in 1929 through a merger of the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. The party supports Icelandic membership of NATO but is opposed to the idea of joining the European Union.

The Chairman of the Independence Party is Davíð Oddsson, Iceland's Minister of Foreign affairs. He was Prime Minister from 1991 to 15 September 2004.

Ólafur Thors, Bjarni Benediktsson, Jóhann Hafstein, Geir Hallgrímsson, Þorsteinn Pálsson and Davíð Oddson. Jón Þorláksson, the first chairman of the Independence party was prime minister for the Conservative party prior to the foundation of the Independence party. Gunnar Thoroddsen was prime minister when he formed a government without general support of the Independence party. It has been criticized for being too liberal and not liberal enough at the same time.
