The story centers around Heinrich Gimpel and a small group of Jews who have managed to survive the holocaust by keeping their identities secret. Of particular notice is the strikingly accurate portrayal of what it is like for a person (Alicia Gimpel in the book) to discover that they belong to a wrongfully despised minority whom they have been taught all their life to passionately hate. In this sense, this work of fiction is strikingly relevant to some minority groups in the Western world today.
