Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah Wali

Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah Wali (sometimes transliterated other ways) was the third ruler of the kingdom of Golconda in southern India under the Qutb Shahi dynasty. He ruled from 1550 to 1580.

Ibrahim's father, Jamsheed Quli Qutb Shah, killed his own father and blinded his brother, taking the throne in the 16th century. Ibrahim ran away and lived in exile as an honored guest of the Raja of Vijayanagar, Emperor Aliya Ramamrayalu. There, he developed a love for the Telugu language which he patronized and encouraged during his reign. When Jamsheed died, Ibrahim returned to Golconda and took the throne. A patron of the arts, Ibrahim sponsored many court poets, such as Singanacharyudu, Addanki Gangadharudu, and Kandukuru Rudrakavi. There were Telugu poets, in a break from tradition, as well as Arabic and Persian poets. He married a Telugu woman, Bhageeradhi. In 1565, he attacked Emperor Aliya Ramarayalu, whom he had previously lived with during his exile.

The cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad are separated by the Hussain Sagar, an artificial lake constructed during Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah Wali's reign. The strengthening of the Golconda Fort and construction of Hussain Sagar lake are some of his major contributions to Hyderabad.
