Ibadan

Ibadan is the second largest city in Nigeria and the capital of Oyo State. It has a population of over 5,000,000. Local industries include food processing and cigarette manufacture.

Ibadan was founded by the Yoruba in 1750. It became a Yoruba military headquarters in 1829 and came under British rule in 1893 as part of the Niger River Delta Protectorate. It was the largest city in West Africa for much of the twentieth century.

The city is home to numerous markets (the largest of which is Dugbe Market, the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture whose grounds contain rainforests, Cocoa House (the first skyscraper in Nigeria) and the Transwonderland Amusement Park. The city also has a train station on the line from Lagos to Kano and a small airport. Ibadan's Liberty Stadium has a capacity of 40,000 and is the home of the 3SC (Shooting Stars) professional football club.
