Lake ran for governor of North Carolina in 1960 and advanced to a Democratic primary runoff with eventual winner Terry Sanford. His conservative views on race contrasted with Sanford's moderate progressivism, making the contest important in North Carolina history.

"Bev" Lake ran for governor again in 1964. He eventually threw his support to Judge Dan Moore, which was crucial in Moore's victory.
