I-70 Series

The I-70 series began as a reference to the 1985 World Series and is now an annual interleague matchup between the two Major League Baseball teams in the state of Missouri, the American League's Kansas City Royals in the state's extreme west, and the National League's St. Louis Cardinals in the state's extreme east. This series is interesting not only because of the intrastate rivalry, but also because of "The Call". It is called the I-70 series because that interstate connects those cities.

Most MLB teams play six games (one three game home series and one three game road series) against one interleague geographic rival (teams which did not have a geographic rival have been assigned one at random). Although these teams do not play six games against each other each year, they do have at least one series with each other per year. From the introduction of interleague play in 1997 until 2001 the Royals hosted the three game series in odd years, and the Cardinals hosted in even years. In 2002 they played 6 games (with one team hosting one three game series each). Since 2003 Kansas City has hosted each three game series. Since regular season interleague play began in 1997, 2002 is the only year in which these teams have ever played more than three regular season games, with all the other seasons being exactly three regular season games.
