It is about a Memphis, Tennessee pimp and drug dealer named DJay (Terrence Dashon Howard), who with the help of his friends, attempts to become a rapper in the state of his mid-life crisis. Shug played by Taraji P. Henson is his pregnant squeeze who takes cares of his house. Shug later sings on his record. Taryn Manning plays Nola, his white hooker, who becomes his backer.

In the course of the file, DJay learns that in order to become the rapper he wants to be, he has to make mature sacrifices. The film's violent climax is undercut by its seemingly ironic ending.

The cast includes Anthony Anderson who is the solid husband and musical producer who champions and pushes DJay. His character struggles with his need to keep his normal married life together and his desire to take a chance creatively.

Rapper Ludacris whose proper name is Christopher Bridges makes his major film debut as Skinny Black, the Memphis-based rapper whose success is a model to DJay. Legendary soul artist Isaac Hayes is also featured as Arnel, a bar owner who tries to give a break to DJay.
