Huntington grew to about twice its current population by the 1950s thanks to a successful coal industry in which it was an active player; as coal has since lost its prominence as a fuel and the city lost much of its industrial base - including glassworks, steel, and manufacturing train parts - Huntington is now effectively a medical community (the two hospitals are the largest employers) and a university town. About 17,000 students are currently enrolled at Marshall University.
