Hunter College High School

Hunter College High School (Hunter High School) is one of the top high schools in New York City, rivaled by Stuyvesant High School, and the Bronx High School of Science. Hunter is administered by Hunter College, a division of CUNY, rather than the NYC Department of Education; there is no tuition fee and it is publically funded. Hunter sends a disproportionate percentage of students to top-flight colleges and universities. According to the Wall Street Journal, Hunter is currently the public high school that sends the most students to the top 3 Ivy League Schools of Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.

Recent amendments to school rules

  • No food in the hallways.
  • In the past, as late as 2003, it was common practice for Hunter students to eat in their respective grade hallways. After repeated efforts to compel students to clean up after themselves failed, the new rule was introduced.
  • No Big Show.
  • This rule was recently enforced by way of keeping Carnival and Mascot Presentation free of offensive material.
  • Faculty advisorship of Annals.
  • More scrutiny of the content of Annals was introduced, in order to, according to the administration, make the publication more democratic, less offensive, and more accessible to all Hunter students.
  • The alternative of a student-run, student-published yearbook was suggested, but was quickly abandoned due to funding issues.
