Humboldt State University is the northernmost campus of the California State University system, and is located in Arcata, California, about 300 miles north of San Francisco, on a hillside with a view of the Pacific Ocean.

The university's student population is around 7250, with undergraduate programs in liberal arts, sciences, arts and other common areas of study. Humboldt also offers many Master's programs, including Biology, Forestry and Environmental Engineering.

The University is divided into three colleges: College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Natural Resources and Sciences and College of Professional Studies.

The president of the university is noted biologist and longtime academic administrator Rollin C. Richmond.

To combat the University's declining enrollment President Richmond funded a study by Collegiete researcher Noell-Levitz for $80,000. The research led to many results and suggestions that are unpopular with students. The official Humboldt State University gateway on the corner of 14th street and LK Wood Blvd came as a suggestion of the study with a price tag of $360,000.

The associated students president is undergraduate Nicole Alvarado. Many of Humboldt's unique programs such as the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology, Youth Educational Services and Student Access Gallery are student initiated, student directed and student employed programs. The University has one of the strongest Associated Students incorporations in the California State University system offering more services and programs than any other ASI.

Humboldt's unique features include the fact that it rests in the Redwoods and overlooks the ocean, its extremely liberal culture and two of its campus organizations: the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology, and Youth Educational Services.
