The Palliser Islands and Cape Palliser were both named after him by Captain James Cook, who appreciated the support that Palliser gave him throughout his career. In particular, Palliser (himself of humble origins) sponsored Cook's entry into the officer corps when the latter was bestowed the Royal Navy ranking of Lieutenant in 1768{{fn|1}}, which enabled Cook to take command of HM Bark Endeavour and the expedition of his first great voyage to the Pacific Ocean.
