as a musician -- he also played mandolin -- his harmony vocals with Petty were a Heartbreakers trademark. Epstein also earned acclaim as a songwriter and a record producer. He produced two albums for John Prine, including 1991's The Missing Years, which won a Grammy for "Best Contemporary Folk Recording," as well as Eric Andersen's Memory Of The Future. Epstein also produced two albums for his girlfriend Carlene Carter: Little Love Letters and I Fell In Love, the latter featuring his co-written title cut, nominated for "Best Female Country Vocal Performance." As a player, Epstein was featured on songs by such artists as Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Stevie Nicks, Roy Orbison and Del Shannon. He died of a suspected drug overdose on February 23, 2003 at the age of 47.
