Although, the Hot Snakes did have some sonic similarities with their previous bands, the Hot Snakes sound was much more direct and primal than Drive Like Jehu and Pitchfork. Reis and Froberg were also heavily influenced by bands such as The Wipers, Suicide, and Micheal Yonkers Band these new influences gave the Hot Snakes a distinctive sound.

Starting out as a "side project" in 1999, Reis had recorded a batch of songs with Delta 72 drummer Jason Kourkounis. Reis then called his former bandmate, Froberg to help out on vocals. Most of this recording session was later released as "Automatic Midnight." "Automatic Midnight" would also be the first release on Reis' record label, Swami records.

Although Reis and Froberg had been collaborators in bands before, the Hot Snakes represented a new challenge: Reis lived in San Diego, Froberg had moved to New York, and Kourkounis lived in Philadelphia.
