Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem


 

There are a number of pseudo chivalric orders of Saint Lazarus operating throughout the world. Most notably, however, are the two factions of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus.

These two factions, normally referred to as the Malta Obedience and the Paris Obedience, have seen huge schisms throughout their modern history and pseudo historians trying to recreate history for them so as to project themselves as the legitimate Lazarite Order of Chivalry.

In 1995, however, a sizeable group of dissatisfied and disgruntled British officers of Saint Lazarus of the Paris Obedience decided to create an independent organisation which would immediately divest itself of any historical myths or interpolations and also to project the authentic Lazarite spirit of caring and assisting the needy without the ludicrous trappings and titles of the pseudo-orders.

Thus, two Grand Priories, namely the Grand Priory of Scotland and the Grand Priory of England, Wales and the Channel Islands formed what was then known as the British Confraternity of Saint Lazarus and immediately dropped the 'military' aspect of the organisation in order to focus on Hospitaller work.

They were joined by the Grand Priory of South Africa and, later a new Grand Priory of the Mediterranean was formed, operating in Italy, Malta and Libya.

The Lazarite history from the times of the Great Crusades up to the suppression of the Order in France during the French Revolution and the Lazarite resurgence in the nineteenth (19th) and twentieth (20th) centuries have been referred to in many a publication. A very objective viewpoint of the Order's history was published in 2004, entitled 'The Green Eight Pointed Cross', authored by Dr. Massimo Ellul.
