Hosokawa Sumimoto


 

Hosokawa Sumimoto (細川 澄元; 1489June 24, 1520) was a samurai commander in the Muromachi period.

He was the foster son of Hosokawa Masamoto who was the Kanrei of the Ashikaga shogunate.

His roots was the Hosokawa clan at Awa Province.

Masamoto had decided to let Hosokawa Sumiyuki, who was from Kujyo clan, succeed to a house.

In 1507, Masamoto was killed by the adherent of Sumiyuki.

Sumimoto was attacked by Kouzai Motonaga who was the retainer of Sumiyuki and escaped to Koga, Omi Province.

Kicking back Sumiyuki, Sumimoto succeeded to a house in proper form.

He and Hosokawa Takakuni who was the branch of Hosokawa clan supported Ashikaga Yoshizumi who was backed up to the 11th shogun by Masamoto, and conflicted with Ashikaga Yoshiki (Ashikaga Yoshitane) who was the 10th shogun.

Takakuni acted in concert with Yoshiki, and Sumimoto was purged to Omi Province.

In 1516, Sumimoto cooperating with Miyoshi Yukinaga who came from Awa Province defeated Takakuni, and came back to Kyoto.

However, after Yukinaga died in the battle, Sumimoto escaped to Awa Province.
