While many people will tell you that Horrorcore is a genre based on theatrics and over the top violence, the truth of the matter is that the genre was created as a way of reflecting the negative aspects of everyday life. Horrorcore is one of the more branched out sub genres of rap music, because rap music tends to grow from regions where Horrorcore began in several different regions, although most people accept that its biggest name is the founder of Detroit rap's horrorcore scene. Esham (The Unholy), who started his career at age 13 with his release BOOMIN words from hell, which boasted of not only selling crack, shooting people who get in his way, having sex with married women but also burning bibles, killing religious icons such as nuns, wanting to be like Hitler, and, of course, claiming his music is like taking a drop of acid.

The genre itself covers several different approaches to making what is commonly called Horrorcore. The biggest and most obvious approach to the music is taking gangsta rap and making it more extreme and controversial, such as what Esham (The Unholy), Insane Poetry, and Brotha Lynch Hung have done. Another facet of the genre is the Insane Clown Posse, who mix some very mild gangsta rap elements in their music, but focus on taking the genre as a way to scare people with a fictional story in the same vein as a horror movie.

Artists like KGP, 2KORPSE, Kannibalistik, Godless Monsters Incorporated, and early Badmind, focused on their lack of faith and apprecation for anti-christian music such as Esham (The Unholy) and even metal bands like Deicide. This brand of Horrorcore is often refered to as The Wicked Shit, because it boasts of the artists sins and torment in a life with out god. On the otherside of the spectrum in Horrorcore, are artists like Industrial/Rap-core pioneer Crossworm who use all forms of negativity under the banner of strength and spirituality...void of the structural mess that is organized religion.

Although the title was pegged by Russell Simmons as being "hardcore rap with some horror movie themes" the truth is Horrorcore is more complicated than that. It's energy and anger; frustration and fear. It's that feeling of loss, despair and wanting to stand up and say you've had enough. Horrorcore is a way for the downtrodden to react to the world without having to take it out on real people, fans can fight back with words of anger rather than acts of violence.
