Hopkins School


 

Hopkins School, previously known as Hopkins Grammar School, is a coeducational private day school in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Founded in 1660, it is the oldest continuously operating secondary school in North America and the fifth oldest educational institution in the United States. Since merging with Day Prospect Hill in 1972, Hopkins has been a coeducational school.

Hopkins has three somewhat divided schools within the school body. The Junior school (consisting of the 7th and 8th grades, the Lower class); and the high school, which is itself broken into the Middle (9th and 10th grade) and Upper (11th and 12th grade) classes. The largest student intakes occur in 7th and 9th grade.

The Hopkins' motto says Hopkins exists "for the breeding up of hopeful youths." To uphold this goal, Hopkins administers a series of acceptance and then placement exams to ensure the best students are admitted, and further testing is done to place student's in the proper levels of certain departments (Math, Language, and Music are the most common).

To fund developments within the school, Hopkins' tuition has increased substantially over recent years. For the 2005-2006 school year, tuition is set at $24,000 (USD) with a variety of financial aid{{ref|aid}} packages (mostly involving a work scholar program).
