It is most famous for being the temporary accommodation of Oda Nobunaga before his invasion of the east. However on the morning of June 21, 1582, the temple was surrounded and set on fire by the traitorous forces of Akechi Mitsuhide. Nobunaga died in the fire (possibly by his own hand, either forced or not) and Mitsuhide would later be killed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This incident is called Incident at Honnoji.
