"Honey" was the first single from Mariah Carey's seventh album, Butterfly, released in 1997. Carey was nominated for two 1998 Grammy Awards for "Honey" – Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song – but won neither. "Honey" was also nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video.

The single was co-written and co-produced by Carey, Puff Daddy, Stevie J, and Q-Tip (listed in credits as "The Ummah"). It also uses two samples: "Hey DJ" originally performed by the World Famous Supreme Team and "The Body Rock" by the Treacherous 3. One of Carey's bigger hits, the single is best known for its video, which changed Carey's public image, and was also a musical transition in Carey's career, moving her from pop music toward hip-hop.

In this hip-hop-influenced song, Carey uses sexual double meanings for the first time, such as the daring opening line, "Honey, you can have me when you want me". More innuendo follows with "And it's just like Honey when your love comes over me".

$$$ Some have suggested that the usage of "honey" in that line refers to male semen, and that the song, in general, refers to the practice of bukkake.
