• In baseball, a hold is awarded to a relief pitcher if he enters in a save situation, records at least one out, and leaves the game without having relinquished that lead
• In aviation, a hold is a predetermined maneuver that keeps an aircraft within a specified airspace while it awaits further clearance
• In climbing a hold is a place to secure a point of contact, such as a ledge or crack
• On the fictional planet of Pern in the McCaffreys' Dragonriders of Pern series, a hold is one of two major forms of human habitation, generally resembling a fortified manor
• In poker games, one or more dealt cards are "held" (not discarded) in an attempt to maximise the value of the resultant hand after the discarded cards are "drawn" (replaced by new cards from the deck). The cards held in this manner are referred to as "the hold".
• In telephony, a call may be placed on hold, in which case the connection is not terminated but no verbal communication is possible until the call is removed from hold. Music on hold may be played for the caller while the call is on hold, especially if the call has been placed to a customer service center.
