Hokkaido University
Hokkaido University (北海道大学; Hokkaido Daigaku, or 北大;Hokudai), located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, is one of the leading national universities of Japan.

The university was founded as Hokkaido Imperial University (北海道帝國大学; Hokkaido Teikoku Daigaku) on April 1, 1918, in the Meiji Era. It was one of nine imperial universities.

Since the founding of Hokkaido University, Sapporo Agricultural College (札幌農学校;Sapporo Nou Gakkō) has been part of the University.

Hokkaido University has since 2004 been incorporated as a national university corporation under a new law which applies to all national universities.

Despite the incorporation which has led to increased financial independence and autonomy, Hokkaido University is still partly controlled by the Japanese Ministry of Education (Monbukagakusho, or Monkasho).
