HMS Sheffield

Three Royal Navy ships have been named HMS Sheffield after the city and county borough of Sheffield in the West Riding of southern Yorkshire.

• The first HMS Sheffield (C24) was a Town-class light cruiser launched in 1936 that saw service in World War II from the Arctic Circle and the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. She was broken up in 1967.
• The second Sheffield (D80) was a Type 42 destroyer launched in 1971 and sunk by enemy action on 5 May 1982 during the Falklands War.
• The third Sheffield (F96) was a Type 22 frigate launched in 1986, sold to Chile in 2003 and renamed Almirante Williams.

All three ships have carried many fixtures and fittings from Sheffield itself, including a great deal of stainless steel, leading to the nickname that has been applied to them all: the "Shiny Sheff".
