Herod the Great

Herod I, also known as Herod the Great was a Roman client-king of Judaea. (c. 74 BC - 4 BC March in Jerusalem). Though he is probably best known from the narrative in Gospel of Matthew, which claims he ordered the Massacre of the Innocents in Bethlehem around the time of the birth of Jesus, to avert the prophecy of a Messiah being born there, the details of his biography can best be pieced together from the works of the 1st century CE Jewish historiographer Josephus.
