Heptameron


 

The Heptameron is a collection of 72 stories written in French by Marguerite of Navarre (1492-1549), and patterned after the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. The erotic stories of adultery and murder usually end with retribution exacted for the sins committed.

The first part of the collected text in the Heptameron is supposedly written by Italian physician-astrologer and magic enthusiast, Peter of Abano. The remainder of the collection of the book consisting of medieval spells and stories are authored by the queen of Navarre, Margaret of Angoulême.

The book was published after both authors had passed away, in 1558. The stories were supposed to be related in seven days, hence the meaning of Heptameron (Greek hepta, 'seven', and hemera, 'day').

The magical connotation of the book referred to the invocation of spirits in the style of the grimoires, touching upon elementary magickal practices.
