From the beginning of his career, he was in favor of internal improvements as a means of opening up the fertile but inaccessible West, and he opposed the spoils system as an abuse of official patronage. But Clay applied himself most to the struggles of slavery, politics, and protecting domestic industries. Throughout his public life he proved his passionate devotion to the Union and his willingness to compromise.
