Henry Carr was an outstanding high school sprinter in Detroit, before also starring at Arizona State University. While competing for the Sun Devils, he won or tied for three national titles, and set world records in the 200 m, 220 yd (201 m) and 4 x 440 m relay. He won the 1963 NCAA title at 200 m in 20.5. The same year he ran 20.69 to tie with Paul Drayton for the USA title. Twice that year he ran world records: an unratified 20.4 for 200 m, and a 20.3 for 220 yd (201 m) just three days later in a college three-way meet. In 1964, Carr ran even faster, hitting a world record 20.2 for 220 yd (201 m).

It was at the 1964 Olympics, however, where Carr achieved his greatest fame, winning the 200 m and anchoring the winning 4 x 400 meters relay (world record 3:00.7). He was top ranked in the world in the 200 m in 1963 and 1964.
