Helle Thorning-Schmidt


 

Helle Thorning-Schmidt (born 14 December 1966) was elected leader of the Danish Social Democrats by the party members on 12 April, ahead of the other candidate, Frank Jensen. She replaced Mogens Lykketoft who had resigned when he lost the 2005 Danish parliamentary election to the sitting government coalition of Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

As the leader of the biggest opposition party in Denmark she can be considered the leader of the Danish opposition. She will be the first female Prime Minister of Denmark if she is able to lead the opposition to power.

She is married to Stephen Kinnock, and is therefore daughter in law of Lord Kinnock, who was the leader of the British Labour Party from 1983 to 1992, and Lady Kinnock.
