In 2004, two of the five finalists for the most prestigious individual honor in college football, the Heisman Trophy, were HCHS graduates: quarterback Alex Smith and running back Reggie Bush (both class of 2002). This was the first time ever that two graduates from the same high school achieved this. Basketball Hall of Famer and current sportscaster Bill Walton was a 1970 graduate. Karl Dorrell, the current head coach of the UCLA Bruins college football team, attended high school at HCHS.
