Born in 1971 in Bryson City, North Carolina, a small town on the Tennessee border, Shuler attended the University of Tennessee from 1990-93, where he gained national attention as one of the SEC's top quarterbacks. He held nearly all Volunteer passing records at the end of his career, but most of them have been shattered by Peyton Manning.

The Washington Redskins used their first-round draft pick on Shuler intending for him to be their quarterback of the future. Shuler had a difficult time adjusting to the pro level, however, and suffered through three fairly abysmal seasons in Washington. After the 1996 season, the Redskins released Shuler to free agency, upon which the New Orleans Saints decided to give the former "can't-miss" prospect another chance. Shuler was given a chance at starting for the Saints in 1997. He suffered a serious foot injury during his first season in New Orleans and went through two surgeries.

After one more lackluster season in New Orleans, Shuler signed with the Oakland Raiders, where he reinjured his foot in training camp and retired. He fell back on his education at Tennessee to became a successful real estate professional in Knoxville, where he had starred in college, and trains competitive hunting dogs in his spare time. His real estate company is one of the largest independent firms in East Tennessee.
