Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) can also prevent heat transfer from taking place. These ceramic materials, which are predominant in zirconia, when coated on say, nuclear reactor coolant pipes can cut down the heat lost from inside the pipe to the atmosphere.

TBCs are generally used on gas turbine blades and shrouds to prevent them from heating up because of friction and fuel combustion. This protection increases the working life.
