Heart of Gold (song)
"Heart of Gold" from 1972's Harvest is Neil Young's only number one hit single in his long musical career. The song, on the surface, seems to be a plea for the redemption of all-conquering love. The addition of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt singing backup helped propel the song to the top of the Billboard charts. The song continues to be among the most requested and performed in concert.

Young wrote in the liner notes of his compilation album Decade: "This song put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch". This was in response to the mainstream popularity that he gained as a result of Heart of Gold's number one status.
