His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah is the Sultan of Brunei, the eldest son of Sir Omar Ali Saifuddin Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the previous sultan.

Personal Wealth

The Sultan has a sizable private fortune. He was considered by Forbes Magazine to be the world's richest man in 1997, with a net worth of almost US$ 40 billion.

He is famous for his vast automobile collection, much of which was reportedly destroyed intentionally. In 1998, the British car magazine Autocar published undercover photographs of the Sultan's cars, which included unique conversions of Lamborghinis and Jaguars into estate cars.

Neverthless, as a devout Muslim, the Sultan is less flamboyant than his younger brother, Prince Jefri, whose extravagance and unsuccessful business ventures were a source of embarrassment. These included a large yacht with the name 'Tits', and an investment company called Amedeo, which collapsed in 1998 owing US$ 10 billion in debt.
