~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ During World War II, US Army First-Lieutenant Thomas Hart (Farrell) is captured by German forces during the Battle of the Bulge. He is sent to a prison camp, where he encounters the social and physical struggles of POWs. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Two black pilots are brought to the camp (the only two among white POWs). One is soon murdered and the other accused of killing a white sergeant. A law-student before the war, Hart is appointed by Army Col. William McNamara (Willis) to "defend" the accused pilot at his court-martial (where German officers cooperate with the court). The trial is a sham, acting as a distraction to hide McNamara's plans of escape. The film ends with "happy-end": escaped soldiers destroy a nearby ammunition plant, the colonel voluntarily returns to the camp to take all the punishment. The German officer responsible for the camp decides not to slaughter the innocent prisoners and the black pilot sees a practical example of how the justice system of the USA is able to overcome racial tensions.
