It was founded in the early 1950s as the replacement to Ward-Belmont College, a former "finishing school" south of downtown Nashville. It was built as a non-residential (day) school in the Green Hills neighborhood, a prestigious and affluent residential area southwest of downtown Nashville. It is dediciated to academic excellence in a single-sex environment, and is often regarded as something of a sister institution to Montgomery Bell Academy. The two institutions do co-operate in certain areas such as dramatic presentations, and Harpeth Hall supplies some of MBA's cheerleaders. They occasionally also are scheduled together for basketball games.

Sports teams were initially nicknamed the "Honeybears" but this seemed rather sexist to many in recent years and the name is now generally given as "Bears".
