Harper, Liberia

Harper, also known as Cape Palmas, is the capital of Maryland County in Liberia. It was an important administrative centre and home to Cuttington College, the oldest university in the nation, but was largely destroyed in the Liberian Civil War. Boats sail from Harper to Monrovia via Greenville. The city's most famous son is George Henry Andrews (1926-1997) Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism under President William R. Tolbert, and Chairman of the Election Commission of 1997 that ushered in Liberia's first truely democratically ellected resident. Cape Palmas is considered to be the traditional hometown of the "Americo-Liberians", descendants of freed slaves from the United States who settled in Liberia and declared it an independent country in 1826.
